[00:00:08] Speaker A: Hello and welcome to 404. Site not found for January 25, 2026. And it's cold. It's very cold in Oklahoma City. [00:00:18] Speaker B: Yeah, it snowed. [00:00:19] Speaker A: We are in the living room. We're in the dining room. We really should have recorded this from your office where it was warm. But, you know, it is cold in. In here. I have a window right behind me. [00:00:32] Speaker B: I've got one right to myself. [00:00:34] Speaker A: Yeah, I got one. So it's right behind my chair. I can even feel the cold. Oh, I'm touching the glass. That's so cold. It has been very cold here. So it has been about, like, right now it's 11 degrees Fahrenheit. I don't know. That would be Celsius. [00:00:47] Speaker B: Alexa, what is 11 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius? And sorry, whoever stuck. [00:00:52] Speaker C: We just said degrees Fahrenheit is minus 11.67 degrees Celsius. [00:00:56] Speaker B: 1167. So almost parallel, but on the negative. [00:01:00] Speaker A: Something like that. Yeah. Did you know that negative 40 is where the two. [00:01:04] Speaker B: Yes. [00:01:05] Speaker A: Measurements meet? Yeah, I learned that one day because I was going out to go to work and it was like, it's minus 40 degree. And I was like, oh, okay. What's that In Celsius? It's minus 40 degrees. I'm like, no, I asked you what it was in Celsius. That is what it is in Celsius, Liam. You just don't listen to me. And then we got in an argument. [00:01:21] Speaker B: And Siri made you sleep on the couch. [00:01:23] Speaker A: Siri? Yeah. Siri called me some bad names that I can't repeat. But anyways, so that's not what we're here to talk about. We have. [00:01:31] Speaker B: Good thing you were travel or traveling last weekend. This weekend. You want to talk about what you did? [00:01:36] Speaker A: I went. I went a traveling with my knapsack on my back fall refall around. And I went to Seattle and I went to two Everett Silver Tips hockey games. And they were a lot of fun. So I have been an Everett Silvertips fan since 2003, since the team started, and I finally had a chance to go to two games. And I've been waiting 22 years to see them play live. And so It'd be like 22 and a quarter because they started like September, so not quite 22 and a half. But I've been waiting to see them play. Got to finally see them. It was a lot of fun. And was named fan of the game and got a signed jersey by the entire team. So it is now being framed and Will be hung up somewhere. I don't know where, but we'll figure that out. And ton of fun. Met the radio broadcaster, did not get on the radio. Had I been, everyone would have known. But I did get to hang out and, you know, meet everyone and it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. And so, yeah, I came back in time. Actually wanted to go this weekend because their game last night would have been a real humdinger to go see live. And there were some other things going on in Seattle regarding gaming and stuff that I wanted to be present for, but I wouldn't have gotten home. I would still be stuck in Washington state, which, I mean, though I would probably enjoy that Alyssa would not enjoy me being gone longer than necessary. So, you know, we have kind of discussed, and I think we've discussed it on the podcast. Maybe not. We have separation anxiety. We do not do well apart. [00:03:20] Speaker B: No, it's like we survive if we need to. It's not like a. You're forbidden from because we don't do the controlling thing. But. [00:03:28] Speaker A: But there is kind of that whimper, whimper. Where did you go? You know. [00:03:35] Speaker B: That'S like the day that we had to fly back on separate flights. [00:03:37] Speaker A: Yeah. We did not happy. We did not like it at all. So I forgot. Just one quick sec. I forgot to mute my speech. Oh, There we go. LinkedIn is just yelling in my ear and I'm like, I don't care what you want. LinkedIn. Okay, so sorry. Sorry about that, you guys. That was just a quick technical adjustment. We record with my phone. So somebody actually asked. They're like, wow, what microphones you guys use? We're using just press record. And the iPhone's microphone gets the nice stereo recording and all the extra reverb of the room, which I'm sure you all wanted, but it lets you know how echoey our room is. So with all the cold weather and everything, we decided, hey, reading sounds fun. Reading is fun. And we're not going to get into the optics of is listening to a book reading. Is reading it in braille reading. I'm reading a book. If you don't like it, go listen to your book. [00:04:38] Speaker B: How I'm taking it in. I'm still reading. [00:04:40] Speaker A: Regardless of I consider it to be reading. I am the only one that matters. You don't matter. There you go. That's how we're going to deal with that. Your feelings don't matter. Because I'm tired of the. Well, that's not really. No, you know what if I'm enjoying The book, that's all that matters for. [00:04:58] Speaker B: The people that want to use it. As a cop out for not teaching children Braille, I totally understand the optics. [00:05:06] Speaker A: I think that could be a whole different episode. [00:05:09] Speaker B: But that is not what this is about. [00:05:11] Speaker A: This is not about that. I'm just gonna say, please teach your kids Braille. I just watched someone write the word introduced as I, N, T, E, R, D U, C E, D. It is not introduced. It is introduced. You would know that if you read Braille. [00:05:26] Speaker B: Literacy is important. [00:05:28] Speaker A: Yeah, that's all I want to say on that. I think that could be a long, long topic. [00:05:33] Speaker B: And this may also be a long episode too. One, because we haven't been here in a while, but two, on the subject of books comes some fun stuff and some demos. [00:05:43] Speaker A: So we're going to demo. We got a. We. We actually have two DA2s. So would that be a DDAA? Four, I don't know. [00:05:51] Speaker B: I don't know. Does it work like Star Wars Android Math or, you know, what's that? [00:05:55] Speaker A: I don't know. But we have DA2s and so we thought we would take a moment and discuss kind of. Well, there's some pretty obvious differences. So the original is. Was that the DA one or. [00:06:07] Speaker B: I believe so. So what I have here is the is. We haven't sent the old ones back just yet. It's the. It was the da. I think they were the DB and the DA because it was Digital Basic and Digital Advanced. [00:06:19] Speaker A: Okay, so we have D. Let's first. [00:06:21] Speaker B: Talk about what these even are. Yeah. So for those in the US you're familiar with the National Library Service through the Library of Congress. For those who are listening from other places around the world, you may have similar things through like your RNIB or CNIB or. [00:06:38] Speaker A: Yeah. And I do want to point out, if you're listening somewhere else in the world, this is probably going to mean nothing to you, but. Because I don't know if you are provided book players, but please tell me. Actually, I'd love to know. [00:06:51] Speaker C: What do you. [00:06:51] Speaker A: What do you get from cnib? What do you get from R. What do you get from Royal Dansk or whatever it is, or. Those are butter cookies. I don't know. I assume that there's some like Danish, but. Yeah. What do you get from DUR Library in Germany? I don't know what it's called. Your library. Yeah. Vision Australia. What do you get? So we are Americans, obviously. You know, I mean, be Canadian, I suppose, but we are Americans. And so everything that we do is based on America. Thus why we give Freedom Units. And instead of using metric, we are the only ones to do so. And yes, I just called them Freedom Units. It's the stupidest name. And it's not the official name, but it's what people say when they're making fun of stuff. I don't know, I'm probably. Whatever. But yeah, so we have these book players and so our libraries provide us a book player. And originally they were, I believe, eight tracks. [00:07:50] Speaker B: I think records were first. [00:07:52] Speaker A: I actually don't know. I. I would love to know. [00:07:56] Speaker B: I remember somebody at work telling me they had records from. [00:08:00] Speaker A: So they had records, but then they also had another thing too. [00:08:04] Speaker B: Yeah, there was eight track, then there was the four track cassette. [00:08:07] Speaker A: Then there was cassettes and I remember the flexi discs vaguely and they played at 8 RPM so you couldn't play them on a regular record player. [00:08:18] Speaker B: That was the same thing with the four track cassettes. You had to play them in a four track player and you were provided one by the library and you could use. [00:08:24] Speaker A: If you actually had access to. Which I did, you could use a four track tape recorder. Because I actually had one of those weirdly enough. And you straight up could play them in that. It was weird. [00:08:37] Speaker B: You weren't going to get some of the fancy like NLS has always had. You know, you can add little bookmarks or. [00:08:45] Speaker A: Yep. [00:08:46] Speaker B: I don't remember what they called them. They had tone player. [00:08:49] Speaker A: But you had tones. So as you. [00:08:50] Speaker B: Yeah, you could set. I think you could mark some of your own. They definitely had tones built in. I think on some of the newer ones you might have been able to mark some spots. [00:08:57] Speaker A: Oh, we never had that. We never had that on cassette. I don't ever. But maybe, maybe they're like. But the idea was it all blurs. [00:09:05] Speaker B: Yeah, we had these when I was little. By the time I was a teenager they had the digital. [00:09:12] Speaker A: Yes, the original, which is what we're going to talk about. So we're going to talk about. So they went to cartridges which are literally just USB drives. [00:09:20] Speaker B: But they encase them in what looks like a little cassette so that it's easier to maneuver. [00:09:26] Speaker A: And it's even got a nice little kind of like finger hole so you can pull them out. They're very easy to manipulate. So if you have any sort of like motor skill loss or whatever, you can still use them. So the design was thought out really well. And the. And the player has a slot. Has a slot in the front and actually can take USB Sticks on the side. [00:09:47] Speaker B: Yes. Has usb. And of course you. On both players, you can plug in headphones. The original was that the DB pretty much just had power. You know, play, rewind, fast forward. I think volume, speed. I think you could do speed. You did not have bookmarks and some of the other things that came with the advance. And I think the dimensions were the same. You just did. [00:10:12] Speaker A: Same exact player. Same exact. Yeah, same dimensions. Because I've seen both. [00:10:17] Speaker B: It's kind of a rectangular device. [00:10:19] Speaker A: Also has. On the front, it has a handle, like a carrying handle you can pull up. And you could put a. Like a lanyard on it, too. [00:10:28] Speaker B: Yes. On the ends of the handle here. [00:10:31] Speaker A: On the inside. [00:10:31] Speaker B: Yeah, on the inside, yes. [00:10:34] Speaker A: There were little spots that you could link. [00:10:36] Speaker B: Yeah. On either side of the cartridge thing, maybe. [00:10:39] Speaker A: And so what's really cool about these players is all the buttons are different shapes and they have brown markings and. [00:10:46] Speaker B: They have tactile markings on the buttons. [00:10:48] Speaker A: Yes. [00:10:49] Speaker B: So on your, you know, on this original guy here, the power has like an indented circle with a bite taken out of the bottom. Your rewind play and fast forward. Or different shapes. [00:11:00] Speaker A: Those are triangles, right. Rewind play is like a slightly concave. [00:11:06] Speaker B: It's like a. It's a rectangle with a concave circle in the middle. [00:11:10] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:11:10] Speaker B: You've got volume, which. The arrows on those are actually thicker than It's. They're a little bit thicker and wider than the triangles on the. [00:11:19] Speaker A: Yeah. And you can tell because they've got some outlines on the tops, too. [00:11:23] Speaker B: And they. [00:11:24] Speaker A: There's a little. [00:11:25] Speaker B: Yeah, they definitely change what some of the markings are on the new player. He's like, I'm looking at the bookmark one on here, and it's like a rectangular key with a dash through it. And for those of you who remember this guy. [00:11:36] Speaker D: Player on. Press any button to learn about its function. [00:11:39] Speaker B: Human wear guy. Hi, Mr. Human. [00:11:41] Speaker A: So learn a boot volume up to. [00:11:44] Speaker D: Increase the volume by one step. Press the volume up button. There are 15 volume steps. [00:11:50] Speaker A: So now it's doing that because you don't have a cartridge in it. [00:11:53] Speaker B: Right. And we don't actually have any cartridges here. [00:11:55] Speaker A: No, sorry. [00:11:56] Speaker B: And that's the only way that you can put books on this old guy is either a cartridge or USB stick. There's no internal memory that you're going to use. And if you notice, you know, I push a button here, Information. [00:12:06] Speaker D: To hear the current reading position. [00:12:08] Speaker B: There is a human status reading this. [00:12:11] Speaker D: Press this information button. You may press the information button repeatedly to step through these items, you may also press and hold the information button to play the built in user guide. Press and hold the information button again to close the. [00:12:25] Speaker A: Oh, so you can get the user guide on here too. So that's. That's cool. [00:12:31] Speaker B: And it's all human narrated. So for those of you who had maybe some of the old Victor products that. Like the original Stream. Yeah. The second gen stream still had this guy too. Or like the Victor Wave. Victor vibe, some of those old things. You remember this guy fondly. [00:12:48] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:49] Speaker B: In fact, the third gen stream still has welcome to Victor Reader in homage to this guy. [00:12:56] Speaker A: But where's this guy? [00:12:58] Speaker B: Don't know his name. [00:12:59] Speaker A: Can someone write in and tell us who this guy is? Because I. I hate that we're calling him this guy. [00:13:04] Speaker B: Yeah, the. The humanware speech guy. [00:13:07] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:07] Speaker B: Don't know what his name is. [00:13:11] Speaker A: And someone. [00:13:13] Speaker B: While he was great. There are some issues. What if you have to update a device? You know, what if you're updating the software and this was something that Humanoid has actually spoken about in some of their own podcasting every time they would have an update, especially if there's a new feature now you have to have this guy here. He's this guy again. You have to have our speech guy come back in and record new samples. And what if he's sick that day? [00:13:37] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:38] Speaker B: You can't just get a different person because it's been the same person. [00:13:41] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:42] Speaker B: All this time. And one of the answers to that is text to speech. And also, I pointed out on this player, the only way you're getting books on here is through physical memory. But what if. What if there was a way to have a player that could sign itself into Bard and you could download your books right on it? [00:14:07] Speaker A: No. [00:14:08] Speaker B: So sorry, old player, you're fired. [00:14:10] Speaker D: Battery charge remaining. Player off. [00:14:13] Speaker A: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. So you mean, like, we could have a player that I could download books with and, like, I would be able to download from, like, let's say Bard. Right. And so maybe, maybe I wanted to read like, Amber Brown is not a crayon. [00:14:29] Speaker B: Yes. [00:14:29] Speaker A: And I don't want to wait for the library to send me the cartridge. Or maybe I don't have the knowledge to go transfer my books. That's right, because computers are hard. You're saying that, like, we could have a player that would do it. [00:14:44] Speaker B: And what if I can't afford a Victor? [00:14:46] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:14:47] Speaker B: You know, I really need a device that can do all of this. Well, the good news is the NLS is listen. Oh, one more Important thing I squirreled on about this old guy to plug it into the wall. You know, there's a cord that hangs out of the back and it's always attached to the player. [00:15:05] Speaker A: It is not a. Yeah. It is not a detachable cord. It is a hard attachment. [00:15:09] Speaker B: Comes out of that port, you have a problem. [00:15:12] Speaker A: Well, and if it frays or gets old or whatever, you have a problem. Okay, but you're. So you're saying. [00:15:18] Speaker B: But this other. What if there was a new device that had a different kind of charger as well? That know. [00:15:23] Speaker C: Maybe. [00:15:24] Speaker A: Does that exist? [00:15:25] Speaker B: Problem? [00:15:26] Speaker A: Does. Does. Cuz that sounds like pie in the sky. Did you just get a text? [00:15:33] Speaker B: Nope. [00:15:33] Speaker A: Oh. [00:15:34] Speaker C: Welcome to NLSDTBMDA2 Reader. [00:15:37] Speaker A: Whoa. So. So such a player does exist. [00:15:45] Speaker B: And that is the DA2 which we have here now. [00:15:51] Speaker A: Now do they have a DA and a DB2 bookshelf? [00:15:54] Speaker B: As far as I know, this is the only one you get. [00:15:56] Speaker C: Mercy by Jody Picot Narrator Madeline Buzzard 16 hours, 5 minutes so Texas speed. Downloaded. [00:16:09] Speaker B: Downloaded. [00:16:11] Speaker A: Wow. So we downloaded this book. So this has a lot more buttons on it. [00:16:17] Speaker C: Connected to Bill, Wisconsin. A science fee. [00:16:20] Speaker A: Yes. Our. Our. Why not? It's not. Not Bill Wisconsin. [00:16:24] Speaker B: I am so acapella does that. [00:16:27] Speaker A: Our WI fi is Bill Y the science fi. [00:16:31] Speaker B: So yes. The player connects to Wi Fi. So DA2. [00:16:36] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:16:36] Speaker B: Has a lot more buttons. They've changed some of the dimensions. You still have your cartridge holder on the front. [00:16:42] Speaker A: Yeah. So the old one I want to describe is like a thicker rectangle. [00:16:46] Speaker B: Yes. [00:16:47] Speaker A: It was cool because it was, you know, it was rectangular. Part of that was because you had to stash the cord somewhere. [00:16:54] Speaker B: Yes. Because it's got this little. [00:16:57] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:58] Speaker B: Hollowed out area in the back where the cord goes. [00:17:00] Speaker A: Like a cavity. [00:17:01] Speaker B: Yes. [00:17:02] Speaker A: And so like. Yeah. This one. [00:17:05] Speaker B: Yeah, this one. They move some things. The. The handle is on the left hand side now instead of on the. [00:17:10] Speaker A: You don't pull it, you just pick it up and carry. [00:17:12] Speaker B: Yes. [00:17:12] Speaker A: It reminds me of like the. I called it the. My. Was it Fisher Place? [00:17:17] Speaker B: Fisher Price. [00:17:18] Speaker A: My first book player. Because it kind of has the Fisher Price. Oh my God. [00:17:24] Speaker B: And I think the speaker. I can't tell if that's a little bit larger. I know it's not sticking out as much. [00:17:30] Speaker A: I think it's about the same. [00:17:31] Speaker B: It's similar. The buttons still have the tactile markings. They have changed the buttons so that what you're used to. They've changed the order, they've changed the markings. So like your play on this one is a square with a big circle punched out of the middle. [00:17:49] Speaker A: It's got a little. Almost like a finger hole in it too. [00:17:53] Speaker B: Yes. So I can push this DB7 and pause it. I feel like these buttons are more. These ones are more clicky maybe a little bit. [00:18:08] Speaker A: Also, we've had our players for a. [00:18:10] Speaker B: Long time, so that could also be. [00:18:12] Speaker A: Yeah, like your battery on your old is gone. [00:18:15] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:18:16] Speaker A: On your day. [00:18:17] Speaker B: Both of our. Yeah, other batteries are gone. [00:18:18] Speaker A: They're toasted. [00:18:20] Speaker B: But this has. Because it has WI fi and the ability to download books and things, there have to be more buttons. You know, all the buttons have multiple functions and Liam is actually going to set one up. [00:18:32] Speaker A: So we're going to do a demo last week. We're going to do a demo in a few minutes on the podcast of, you know. What does that sound like? [00:18:40] Speaker B: Yeah, I got mine the week before last. There was a slight clerical error and his actually showed up a few days ago. And so, like, we have one out to kind of look at and talk about. But then he's actually going to do a. So I just got my new player. How do I set any of this up? And. [00:18:57] Speaker A: And I've already taken it out of the box because there really wasn't much to unbox. But I'm going to take you guys through. Like. I just got my player. I just got it. It's here. [00:19:06] Speaker B: Still has the, you know, USB port on the side so you could plug a flash drive in. Still has the cartridge slot at the bottom, of course, and a USB C which is your charger. [00:19:17] Speaker A: So no more do you have to worry about a cord hanging out of the back and becoming frayed. You now can use USB C that you know and love. And that's cool because maybe you have a power strip that has a USB C to usbc. You can do that. Also, the battery on this thing is pretty gnarly. [00:19:35] Speaker D: Good. [00:19:39] Speaker C: Battery, 100% remaining battery time, 74 hours. Internal space available, 26.63 gigabytes. [00:19:50] Speaker A: How many books do you have? [00:19:51] Speaker B: I just have one on the moment. Yes. So it gives you 32 gigs or roundabouts. [00:19:56] Speaker A: Is that a long book? [00:19:59] Speaker B: You don't get the full 30 because you still have the operating system. [00:20:03] Speaker A: Okay. [00:20:04] Speaker B: So I think I started out with like 27 or 28. [00:20:07] Speaker A: Gotcha. [00:20:07] Speaker B: I mean, I think it is a 16 hour book. They're longer books. [00:20:11] Speaker A: I would like to see them maybe do 64. [00:20:13] Speaker B: But one can argue you can use cartridges. You can delete a book when you're done with it. [00:20:18] Speaker A: True. You can do that. [00:20:20] Speaker B: You are probably not going to run out of room. And you can get. And you can buy cartridges if you prefer to have your books. [00:20:28] Speaker A: And you can still put a flash drive on the side. Right. So, like, you would still, you know. [00:20:32] Speaker B: Get them from your library. Now, not all the libraries have these yet, and some of them have them in limited quantities, like it was explained to me. Yeah. Because you're a Bard user, we will send you one. They are still, you know, they still have the original guys too. And of course, on both players you get a headphone jack. You know, sometimes you like to listen with headphones. [00:20:54] Speaker A: You have a USB A. I know you mentioned that. So you have a USB A. And that USB A will also take keyboards. [00:21:01] Speaker B: Yes. Which is going to be important on this because when you are entering your Bard credentials, your WI FI keyboard is going to make your life. [00:21:11] Speaker A: Yes. And searching too. And we'll. We're going to do a demo of that here in a few minutes. We'll show you set up to reading. We're gonna download a couple books. I will get some books, both with the keyboard and without the keyboard. [00:21:22] Speaker B: And this has a dedicated bookshelf button. You know, on the old ones you had to hold the play button, which you can still believe you can still do. Yes. [00:21:32] Speaker C: One book mercy. Okay. [00:21:37] Speaker B: Just making it stop talking. [00:21:38] Speaker A: And then you also have a mode button that will toggle between your books and Bard. So at the moment, if you're like, oh, wow, I can't wait to get one of these things because I can do all this stuff. It only supports the bookshelf and Bard. [00:21:51] Speaker B: Yeah. Don't know if that will ever change. [00:21:53] Speaker A: I would like to see it change, but I mean, hey, it's a new. [00:21:57] Speaker B: Device and you still have all the controls. You love your speed, tone, volume. I actually tend to usually keep my speed a little bit higher, but I slowed it down for the sake of this demo demonstration. You have a set of arrow keys. You have the info button, which you had on the old one, but the info button does more here. And you actually have up, down, left, right for navigation with your info in the middle. So the shape of that's a little different. Your bookmark key looks very different than the old one. This is like a diamond shape with a line in the middle. Whereas on this guy over here, I had the bookmark key was like a rectangle with a line in the middle. [00:22:42] Speaker A: Yep. [00:22:43] Speaker B: And it just had the letter M. But because we have mode and mark now we have like MD mk. [00:22:48] Speaker A: Yep. [00:22:49] Speaker B: SF for bookshelf. [00:22:51] Speaker A: And the bookshelf thing is kind of cool. It looks like it's a key with some several lines through it that look almost like there's a stack of books. [00:23:00] Speaker B: Yeah, there's three lines going across. [00:23:02] Speaker A: Kind of like a stack of books, honestly. Like if you stack books. [00:23:04] Speaker B: Also another thing which we haven't really talked about here in the user guide definitely describes this too. And there's a built in user guide. You can also download it. But the keys are also different colors. [00:23:17] Speaker D: Oh. [00:23:17] Speaker B: So if you are a low vision user you can look at the color. [00:23:24] Speaker A: The keys also different colors on the old one as well. So that's not a new thing. [00:23:29] Speaker B: No, but they really do try to think of everything as well. My point here. [00:23:32] Speaker A: So yeah, if you're low vision, if you're no vision, if you have motor skill loss or maybe even neuropathy, this might be a good player for you. [00:23:41] Speaker B: And they even. I know with the old ones and I don't know what the deal is with these new ones. I would think they still have something with the old ones you could actually use like let's say you had no use of your hands. They had like sip and puff switches that you could get. [00:23:56] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:23:57] Speaker B: Where you would actually. [00:23:57] Speaker A: I would think that they still support switches and stuff like that. [00:24:01] Speaker B: And this has Bluetooth. [00:24:04] Speaker A: Really? [00:24:07] Speaker B: Me? Of course I say that and I want you make sure it actually does before I. [00:24:12] Speaker C: Settings, user settings, voice selection, airplane mode, WI fi nls. [00:24:19] Speaker B: Yes it does. Here we go. [00:24:21] Speaker A: I love that it has airplane mode, by the way. So you can take this on a plane with you. Of course they're going to look at it and go what the heck is this thing? But I love that there is airplane mode. [00:24:30] Speaker B: That happens anyway when you travel with a note taker, braille display, anything security's like we're going to. [00:24:36] Speaker A: Well then they pull out you. They pull out your Monarch. [00:24:38] Speaker B: They pull out my E reader. [00:24:40] Speaker A: They never pulled out your Monarch. [00:24:41] Speaker B: No, they never did here at our security here. [00:24:44] Speaker A: Somebody at work get their Monarch pulled? [00:24:46] Speaker B: I think so. Or maybe they just pulled it out. They may also not have pre check. I don't know what the status on that is. But yes, you have Bluetooth. So if you use a Bluetooth headset, if you use shokz or if you use hearing aids. [00:24:59] Speaker A: Oh, very cool. So look at that. You have options. So we're gonna go demo this and we'll do that in just a moment. Should we say goodbye to it So I can do the Sesame street thing? [00:25:14] Speaker B: Oh yes. So when you turn this off, it will play some more music. We had some music when it came on. [00:25:23] Speaker C: Shutting down. Please wait. [00:25:29] Speaker A: I'm waiting. [00:25:33] Speaker B: This is so human wearing. You'll tell by the menu structure. You can tell by all the. Please wait. Like, this is so. [00:25:39] Speaker A: Well, I'm. I'm glad it's not. I'm glad it's human. We're not Zoomax. [00:25:42] Speaker B: Oh, me too. [00:25:43] Speaker A: So I'm so. I'm gonna say, if you're listening from Zoom X, Sorry, nothing personal. You'll get it figured out one day. We've got faith in you. You can do it. [00:25:53] Speaker B: All right, so now, how in the world do we set this up? [00:25:56] Speaker A: How. How do we set this up? So come with me to a land of. [00:26:02] Speaker B: To the land of Liam's office. [00:26:03] Speaker A: To pure imagination or something. Or my office. Whatever you want to call it. So we're gonna go into my office. And, you know, here we go. So into my office. Let's set this up. Hello, and welcome to my office. So we're going to take a look at the new talking book player. And as we mentioned before, we're not doing a complete unboxing. There really wasn't a lot to take out. You have your, I believe, your cord and all that stuff, and in. In the box. And there's nothing really, really amazing to show you, but I'm going to take you through the process of setting up your player. We have just gotten it out. How does that work? Okay, well, let's start it up and get going with it. So we did not describe all the buttons to you. There are a lot of buttons. I'm going to do a very, very quick sort of overview. So at the top, top left corner, I have my speaker. Going to the right, I have my tone. Those are two sort of triangular, rounded, we'll call them rounded triangles. Between that, I have my volume buttons. Those actually have raised lines that are sharper triangles and. And they're kind of on squares. To the right of that is my speed. Those are very similar to my tone. So it's going to go tone, volume, speed. Below that, I have a bookshelf button on my far left. It has a stack of three lines. Looks like maybe like books. I have. What else we got over here? Below that? Actually, we'll go below. I have the M. K. Oh, mk. It looks like mch. It's mk. I believe that is my bookmark button. And then I have a mode button. So that's going down in a row on the left. Then I have A sort of like arrows like you'd find on a TV remote. I've got up, down, left, right, and in the middle I have an info button which is just like an eye on a square. To the right of that I have my power and I should also have. I'm looking for. I should have asleep. Oh, he's chilling out above my play. Rewind and fast forward. Play of course has a little dimple in the middle and rewind and fast forward are to the left and right. They are not triangular like the other ones were. They're more rounded. I don't know how to describe these shapes, but they're more rounded, you know. And then like I said, we've got all of our buttons. So a lot of buttons here, but really the important one is going to be power. Power is directly below. Well, actually power is to the far right. Bring your hand to the top right corner. Bring it down, you're going to hit power. There's a braille P and there's a circle that surrounds that button. We're going to turn on the player and get our Sesame street music and it's going to load. [00:29:04] Speaker C: Welcome to NLSDTBMDA2 Reader. Please wait. [00:29:15] Speaker A: And we're waiting. Still waiting. Still waiting. [00:29:23] Speaker C: Bookshelf zero books Entering key describer mode. So I have any button to get a description. [00:29:30] Speaker A: No books, which is unfortunate at this point in time. However, we are going to go into the menu and I believe to do that. Let's see. Well, we'll find out because we have. [00:29:45] Speaker C: Buttons info While in a book this wants to get book information. Press and hold to open the menu. [00:29:54] Speaker A: Ah, in a menu press once to. [00:29:56] Speaker C: Select the current menu option. [00:29:59] Speaker A: So I was right. So we're going to hold down this I to go into the menu. [00:30:05] Speaker C: Entering menu. Book reader. [00:30:09] Speaker A: So we're going to take a quick look through this menu and to go through the menu we're going to use our left and right arrows. [00:30:14] Speaker C: NLS Bard Settings. Battery info. Book Reader. [00:30:20] Speaker A: So as you can see, this menu has four items in it. It's a very small menu, not a lot happening. Which hey, that's just fine. I don't mind that one little bit. So we're going to go into settings. [00:30:34] Speaker C: User settings. [00:30:36] Speaker A: So we have user settings. [00:30:37] Speaker C: Voice selection. [00:30:38] Speaker A: Voice selection. [00:30:40] Speaker C: Airplane mode. [00:30:41] Speaker A: Airplane mode. We talked about that. [00:30:43] Speaker C: WI Fi. [00:30:44] Speaker A: WI Fi. We're going to go in here, but let's just go all the way around. [00:30:47] Speaker C: NLS Bard settings. [00:30:49] Speaker A: All right, we'll need to do that. [00:30:50] Speaker C: Bluetooth dating time software update. Oh, about resets menu Close user settings. So we want voice selection, airplane mode. WI fi WI fi WI fi off. [00:31:07] Speaker A: All right, wifi is currently off again. If you use anything humanware, this is going to be very, very similar to you as Alyssa mentioned earlier in the podcast. [00:31:17] Speaker C: Loading. [00:31:18] Speaker A: All right, turn on WI fi. [00:31:22] Speaker C: Status. [00:31:23] Speaker A: New connection, New connection. I'm glad that they explain it, but I don't know about you, but that sounds very intimidating. There's a lot going on. So what we're going to do instead is use a keyboard. We are going to to use a keyboard instead because it will support that. So I'm going to hook a keyboard up. [00:33:17] Speaker C: USB keyboard connected. [00:33:20] Speaker A: And I'm going to type in my ssid. I don't know. Hopefully it won't speak it out loud. [00:33:27] Speaker C: Oh, L15 confirmed. [00:33:32] Speaker A: Well, you heard a couple letters out of it. [00:33:39] Speaker C: Loading. [00:33:40] Speaker A: But that's okay. [00:33:44] Speaker C: Connection successful. Now it stopped taking key input. What's going on? Did the keyboard take over? Let me. Oh my Book player has stopped functioning. What happened? Okay, well, that's weird. It, like, turned off. [00:34:48] Speaker C: Please wait. [00:34:50] Speaker A: Okay, well, that was interesting. Yeah, that. That was not expected, but that's okay. That was kind of interesting. [00:36:52] Speaker A: We can do that. So it's yelling at us because our battery is not high enough. Again, if you are familiar with humanware stuff, that's like a standard and that's good. It protects you and it, you know, protects the device and. All right, so we are plugged in. [00:37:14] Speaker C: Install update now. Info to confirm. Any other restarting. [00:37:19] Speaker A: Restarting. All right, so we are restarting our device and getting more Sesame street music. And so it's going to restart this here. [00:38:24] Speaker A: It's nice when you can cut that stuff out. The magic of editing is magical. Okay, and we should be 95. [00:38:34] Speaker C: 95. [00:38:36] Speaker A: There we are. And then should hit 100 and restart. [00:38:40] Speaker C: Update complete. Shutting down. [00:38:43] Speaker A: Shutting down. So I'll have to restart it. So again, very humanware esque. Which is cool. I mean, they're the Ones that make these. I guess so. Makes sense. Oh, and I guess that means it's shut down. Okay, so start it back up to. [00:39:06] Speaker C: NLSDTBMDA2 reader, please wait. [00:39:09] Speaker A: All right, so it is going to load up and I'm going to go set up Bard. I'll probably do a quick edit on that because you don't need to Hear My Password. [00:39:17] Speaker C: Bookshelf 0 Books entering key describer mode. So let me press any button to get a description. [00:45:37] Speaker A: I can hit search collection mode and go back. I would love to see them add, like, NFP Newsline and stuff like that. But it does sound like we also have some magazine access here, so we'll see what this player does. But I like it. It's fun. It's cool. Great way to have books. You want to go on a trip, bring your player with you. It's going to last you a long time. As you heard earlier, it was like 70 hours on a battery. So what? A battery. Okay, well, let's head back to my office or let's head back from my office to the living room and we'll finish up this podcast. Wasn't that cool? Ah, this is great. [00:46:17] Speaker B: I love this fantastic, fantastic demo. [00:46:20] Speaker A: Yeah. Pick some good books, I think. [00:46:24] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. All the people are going to just love them and rush out to get those exact books. [00:46:28] Speaker A: Love my book choices. Of course, again, we will record this demo later, so we are breaking the fourth wall a little bit. [00:46:37] Speaker B: I have actually already discussed what it's going to be. [00:46:40] Speaker A: So I have not recorded this. I have not recorded this demo yet. As we record this podcast, it's going to get recorded in post, but we. [00:46:49] Speaker B: Have some working knowledge of what the demo is going to be because we do try to plan these things a little bit. [00:46:54] Speaker A: Little bit, Yeah, a little bit. Try to play. [00:46:57] Speaker B: Most of this podcast is pretty off the cuff, but for that it was like, well, let's. Let's start with kind of the talking about the going from the old to the new and then the demo and kind of talk about the fun stuff that you'll see in the demo. [00:47:12] Speaker A: So, yeah, I do hope that that is, you know, knowledge for some people. I think by now most people have these. I know there are people whose states may not have them or who are like, I don't know if I want to upgrade. What does it do? Hopefully your friends at 404 gave you some insight on what it does. And maybe you'll call your library and get one. [00:47:35] Speaker B: And some libraries have a list that they can put you on so that when they have them, you are informed. [00:47:42] Speaker A: We had a list and I ended up calling anyways. [00:47:45] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:47:46] Speaker A: And they were like, oh, yeah, we forgot. Hold on. We'll just get you one. So I would honestly, if your library has a list, call them anyways. Just do it. Squeaky wheel. [00:47:56] Speaker B: Check in every so often. [00:47:58] Speaker A: Squeaky wheel, folks. Squeaky wheel. [00:48:00] Speaker B: Yeah. Check in with them. If this is something. And I don't want to speak for every library, but I will say ours also sent us some shipping boxes to send back the old players, which we will do when this weather gets a little bit better. [00:48:14] Speaker A: Well, we can actually leave the house. [00:48:15] Speaker B: They also didn't really ask for them back, but we were insistent of like, hey, we don't need these. Let somebody that still needs an old player use an old player. Yeah, we're happy. [00:48:24] Speaker A: And I just think it's the right thing to do if you're not using a thing. And you. It was, you're borrowing, you're borrowing. And that is. Remember, this is not your player. This is not your e reader. So don't go sell your e reader on ebay. [00:48:38] Speaker B: No. [00:48:38] Speaker A: You know who you are. Don't do it. [00:48:40] Speaker B: Or any of the blind selling anything. [00:48:43] Speaker A: No, don't sell your E reader. It is not yours to sell. You know, return it. Return it to the library. That's where it goes. And set it back. But no, otherwise. Yeah, no. I hope you guys enjoy this podcast. You know, we wanted to do something on the players. Thought it would be fun and. Yeah. So I don't know. I really don't have anything else to say other than if you are in the path of the storm. Stay cold or stay cold. Stay warm. Don't. Don't get cold. No, don't stay cold. Stay warm, stay safe. Don't get cold. Follow what you're told. So if they're like, hey, it's looking bad, don't go out. Don't go out. [00:49:25] Speaker B: Yeah, they tell you to run your faucets, do that. [00:49:28] Speaker A: Run your faucets. Do what you got to do. Obviously, I think by now we're probably through. I think the worst of most of this. I think some areas east are getting so Kentucky, I think's getting it tonight. [00:49:40] Speaker B: Tennessee is getting some ice and stuff. [00:49:44] Speaker A: So stay safe, stay safe. You know, we want you back here on the next episode. Obviously, I don't think It's a life threatening storm. I have not heard of any fatalities so far. But stay safe. We want you all back here happy. Healthy sound. And so you can listen to More sounds from 404. Site not found all right. Or something. So we will see you when we see you here on 404.
